Cardinal Sarah tells EU that gender ideology, Islamic fundamentalism are ‘apocalyptic beasts’

BRUSSELS (LifeSiteNews) — Cardinal Robert Sarah, during a conference speech before the European Parliament on Wednesday, denounced gender ideology and Islamic fundamentalism as “apocalyptic beasts” that threaten to destroy the family and humanity itself.
In his nearly hour-long July 15 speech for a conference in the EU Parliament building entitled, “Europe and Africa: In Dialogue with Cardinal Robert Sarah,” which also included speeches delivered by European Parliament Vice-President Antonella Sburi and the apostolic nuncio to the European Union, Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the Guinean prelate slammed the evils of abortion, homosexual “marriage,” gender ideology, and Islamic fundamentalism and their impact on Africa, Europe, and all of society.
While decrying the fact that the U.N., as well as European and other Western powers, have sought to impose gender ideology on African nations in exchange for financial aid, Sarah echoed remarks that he made during the 2015 Synod on the Family that gender ideology, as well as Islamic fundamentalism, are “apocalyptic beasts.”
“In 2015, during the Synod on the Family, I said, and I do not take back a single word today, that ‘gender ideology and Islamic fundamentalism each represent, in their own way, two apocalyptic beasts that threaten to destroy not only the family, but humanity itself, the image of God,'” he said.
“Some considered this image excessive. I continue to believe that it contains some truth. Could it be that these forces, though very different in origin and form, share the pretense of rewriting humanity to their own liking?” he added. “One in the name of so-called progress, the other in the name of a so-called return to an original purity, denying in either case that religious freedom and that human dignity.”

The Catholic Church teaches that God creates every individual male or female at the moment of his or her conception and that sex is an immutable trait that “characterizes man and woman not only on the physical level but also on the psychological and spiritual, making its mark on each of their expressions.”
The 1975 Vatican document Persona Humana warned against the tenets of the modern transgender movement, stating “there can be no true promotion of man’s dignity unless the essential order of his nature is respected.”
Catholic teaching also condemns bodily mutilation and sterilization as “against the moral law” and denounces gender ideology.
On Islamic fundamentalism, Sarah himself is among several prominent Catholic prelates who have warned of Muslims and other groups’ mass migration into Europe.

In 2017 remarks at Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Poland, the African cardinal called out the “outside forces” who try to impose themselves on Poland and other European nations without assimilating.
“In what manner is it possible to remove the rights of the nation to distinguish between a political or religious refugee, who must flee from his homeland, and the economic migrant, who wants to change his address without adapting himself, identifying with, and accepting the culture of the country in which he will live?” Sarah pondered.

The cardinal also underscored the importance of rebuilding nations that have suffered from war and other injustices without uprooting the people of other countries and called out those who “exploit the word of God” to justify the promotion of multiculturalism.
“I say again that we must work together to rebuild the nations that have fallen victim to war, corruption, and injustice, but this does not mean encouraging the uprooting of peoples and the destruction of nations,” he said. “Some people exploit the Word of God to justify the promotion of multiculturalism and gladly take advantage of the excuse of hospitality to justify the admission of immigrants.”
Earlier in his remarks, Sarah highlighted Europe’s elevation of so-called abortion “rights” and LGBT ideology and how this has contributed to the continent’s “self-destruction” by distorting reason.
“When Europe constructs ‘rights’ detached from the truth about the human person – abortion, which some would like to elevate to a ‘fundamental right,’ ‘sexual identity’ reduced to pure subjective self-construction – reason itself is distorted from being an instrument for knowing the truth it becomes an instrument of power capable of imposing itself through the force of law and money on those who do not share those promises,” he said.
