(LifeSiteNews) — In a recent interview on the Brian Lehrer Show, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani pledged $15 million in taxpayer funds to so-called “gender-affirming care.”

In recognition of “Pride Month,” Mamdani announced the initiative as an effort to “bridge the gap” created by recent cuts to funding for “gender transitions.”

“We’ve put forward $15 million to gender-affirming care over the next two years to ensure that we can start to bridge the gap of the funding that has been stripped of this care,” said Mamdani.

Regarding the federal crackdown on “gender transitions,” Mamdani claimed “there are explicit consequences from both the cruelty that we’re seeing from the federal government’s policies and the decisions that are being made by private health care institutions here in New York City.”

The far-left mayor, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has made pro-LGBT causes a key focus of his tenure in office. In March, Mamdani appointed a transgender attorney to lead the city’s new “Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs.” Mamdani touted this move on the Brian Lehrer Show, noting how this was “just the beginning” of efforts to support LGBT-identifying New Yorkers.

“I’m incredibly excited at us having an office led by such a stalwart New Yorker with a mission to illuminate the ways in which City government can actually deliver for New Yorkers in this way, because the work is frankly just beginning on this,” he said.

The recent financial pledge follows Mamdani’s campaign promises to make New York City an “LGBTQ+ sanctuary.”

“New York City must be a refuge for [so-called] LGBTQIA+ people, but private institutions in our own city have already started capitulating to Trump’s assault on trans rights” (i.e., “gender transitions”),” he stated.

Mamdani elaborated on his broader goal of increasing funding so that gender-confused individuals could access “transition” resources, stating that he believes such services are a matter of “dignity” for these individuals.

“Every single New Yorker deserves access to comprehensive, life-saving health care,” said Mamdani. “My administration is committed to protecting that right and to ensuring that trans and gender non-conforming New Yorkers have the resources they need to live with dignity.”
