Cardinal Zuppi suggests false religions promote peace ‘in the very name of God’
Cardinal Zuppi’s remarks are practically normal in today’s Church since religious indifferentism is widely accepted.

(LifeSiteNews) — Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, president of the Italian bishops’ conference, on Sunday suggested that religions which deny Christ can promote peace.
“Religions have a great opportunity. They reveal the possibility of peace, indicate the paths for peace, disarm hearts, and prepare them for encounters with others.” Zuppi told Vatican media on the opening day of the International Meeting for Peace.

The gathering continues the “mission” of Pope John Paul II’s interreligious gathering at Assisi, Italy, in 1986, and brings together leaders of various religions, politicians, and other civil representatives to promote interreligious dialogue. This year’s meeting marks the 40th anniversary of the Assisi event.
Zuppi continued, referring to religions in general, “In many other ways, they also contribute to the search for peace and encourage those who govern nations — as someone born in Assisi would have said — to encourage those who govern nations to choose peace, in the very name of God.”

If Zuppi referred to St. Francis of Assisi, his suggestion that the holy Franciscan was complacent about other religions is false. Author Frank M. Rega has written about how, for example, St. Francis of Assisi walked into a Muslim camp in order to preach Christianity and convert the sultan during the Fifth Crusade to Egypt.
The idea that religions other than Christianity can promote true peace is false and contrary to the Catholic faith. While true Christian charity results in material peace, it seeks not merely peaceful coexistence with those of other religions, but the conversion of others to the true Faith, a point which was absent both in Zuppi’s remarks and in the International Meeting for Peace.
LifeSiteNews contributor S.D. Wright has argued that the 1986 Assisi World Day of Prayer for Peace has had a very harmful legacy, in part due to the proliferation of regional interfaith events which promote religious indifferentism. “Such meetings are now so common that many self-identifying Catholics have become habituated to them – to the point that they can pass without any comment or objection at all,” Wright remarked.
During the scandalous 1986 event, a “Buddhist delegation placed a golden statue of Buddha above the tabernacle of St. Peter’s Church, bowed down before it, and offered it incense, and bowed to worship it,” Wright recounted.
